The idea for Mary Review came to Jillian Goodman while daydreaming on a road trip in August last year.
She noted that general interest magazines such as The New Yorker – while appealing to men and women – were largely written by men.
The 2014 VIDA Count, a yearly publishing inventory by Women in Literary Arts in the US, backed up her assertion. It found that only 30 per cent of articles in The New Yorker had female bylines.
